Meet The Staff: Maddie Sherman

1. How long have you been with WNRN and how did you get started?

I started in a part-time capacity with WNRN in October of 2024, working mostly as a Hear Together producer and in-studio session video editor. This past July, I joined the team full time (woohoo!) and now work with the membership team in addition to my previous responsibilities.

2. What is your role at WNRN and how would you explain what you do?

I work as a Membership and Programming Assistant—which means I get to work on a lot of different things within the station. On the membership/fundraising side of things, I record member testimonials, update member information, help run member events, and run our fund drive shipping operations.

With programming, I still record and produce Hear Togethers for the Richmond and Norfolk areas. I also edit videos for our In-Studio Sessions and other projects as needed!

3. What’s your favorite recent music discovery?

Listening to WNRN has made music discovery a part of my every day! Palmyra, Samia, The Wildmans, and Royal Otis have been some of my favorite finds from the station.

4. What might be an unexpected artist on your personal playlist?

Rosalía has been one of my favorite artists since 2020! She’s a classically trained Barcelona native and sings in 13 different languages on her most recent album Lux.

5. A couple of firsts: What was the first concert you ever attended? What was the first album you ever bought?

If I recall correctly, my first concert was One Republic at the Amphitheater in Virginia Beach in 2013—I had just finished the 6th grade.

The first album I remember buying for myself was Misterwives’ Our Own House, also when I was in middle school.

6. What would be your 1-3 Top ‘Desert Island’ albums? The ones you would want with you if stranded on a desert island. Why?

Moisturizer – Wet Leg: I already liked Wet Leg before the new release, but this album absolutely blew me away. Pokemon and Jennifer’s Body, are my two favorites but I could listen to the entire album on repeat forever. I think it’s really captured my experience with the feeling of being in love.

Heard It In A Past Life – Maggie Rogers: I found so many of the songs off of this album at different times in my life. I think they are equal parts sonically and tonally interesting—and I could listen to Rogers sing all day. The Knife is my personal favorite.

Dance Fever – Florence & The Machine: One of my closest friends put me onto this album with Mermaids. Free and King have since become other longstanding favorites. It is whimsical and haunted in a way I can’t seem to get enough of.

7. What are some of your favorite hobbies/things to do outside of music and radio?

I absolutely love any kind of tactile creative outlet – especially sewing and crocheting! I used to make my own clothes when I was little and am trying to incorporate that practice back into my life. While I’ve got more sewing experience under my belt, my next two goals are to further explore crochet and to start learning how to knit.

I also love having time to unwind in the kitchen and getting to try new recipes. I’m especially psyched it’s finally soup season!

Extra: What shows are you looking forward to in 2026 / What were some of your favorite shows in 2025?

I had a great year of live music in 2025! Penelope Road was so much fun in February, Maggie Rogers’ performance at UVA in April was such a treat, and I will remember seeing Beyoncé in DC on July 4th for the rest of my life! Wet Leg in September in Brooklyn was also an absolute dream!

I don’t have anything booked for 2026 yet, but I’d love to see Florence & the Machine (or Rosalía when she hopefully announces tour dates).
