Through the Izaak Walton League of America’s Virginia Save Our Streams program, volunteers across the state become certified monitors and test the health of local streams by identifying benthic macroinvertebrates, or stream bugs, that live in them.
Based on the types of bugs that are found, they can give the stream a health score – information that they share with the state and the community.
This program is open to all, and anyone can become a certified monitor.
