Asphalt Meadows is Death Cab For Cutie’s most adventurous record in over a decade, due in part to an experiment the band tried: Giving each bandmate a day to work on a song before handing it off to another member, who could do as they pleased, no strings attached. Ben Gibbard and Dave Depper join host Stephen Kallao to discuss making Asphalt Meadows, and share live performances of songs old and new, on the next World Cafe.

When you think of Top Gun, it’s hard not to think about “Danger Zone.” The same can be said for “Footloose” or “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack. All were sung by the “king of soundtracks,” Kenny Loggins. On the next World Cafe, Loggins walks us through his new memoir, Still Alright, from the Loggins and Messina days to becoming the go-to hitmaker for big ‘80s blockbusters.

Robyn Hitchcock has been consistently releasing music since the 1970s, as both a solo artist and with his bands The Soft Boys and The Egyptians. His latest album, Shufflemania!, was released in the Fall of 2022 and features guest appearances from artists such as Brendan Benson, Johnny Marr, and Sean Ono-Lennon. Robyn shares an exclusive mini-concert, performing songs from the new album, as well as some of his classics, on the next World Cafe.

Born in Zambia and raised in Botswana, Sampa the Great became known for her music while completing university in Australia. On the next World Cafe, she talks about returning to Zambia after further success Down Under and shares how the return home changed how she wrote songs. Plus, she tells the story of how Angelique Kidjo ended up singing on her latest album.
