Meet The Hosts: Ed Monde of Grateful Dead and Phriends

1. How long have you been with WNRN and how did you get started?

I just started my 19th year at the station (so, 18 complete years). Marc was told that every Saturday had to be live, so he needed an “understudy.” We were buddies already and he reached out to me to learn the ropes for a few weeks then be his fill in when he needed to be away. After a couple of training weeks we decided it was too much fun and the rest is history.

2. What should WNRN listeners know about your show, and/or your music tastes?

We love doing the show (Grateful Dead and Phriends). It’s still an absolute blast. Best listeners EVER! I am a complete jam band fan but I also love ‘80s pop and exploring the blues and jazz roots that influenced the bands I enjoy.

3. What’s your favorite, recent music discovery?

Do versions of Dead songs count???

4. What might be an unexpected artist on your personal playlist?

ABBA!

5. A couple of firsts: What was the first concert you ever attended? What was the first album you ever bought?

First concert – The Police at William and Mary Hall, Synchronicity tour. First album I ever bought was probably 1984 – Van Halen. That said, I came home from school one day to The Joshua Tree, Graceland and Europe ‘72 on my bed. My parents thought I would like them. Um, still some of my absolute favorite albums.

6. What would be your 1-3 Top ‘Desert Island’ albums? The ones you would want with you if stranded on a desert island. Why?

I hate this question, only because it changes fairly regularly. Grateful Dead – Pacific Northwest ‘74 because it’s a lot of material and showcases a high water mark for the band. Lots of musical conversation going on. Phish – Billy Breathes because I’d need my Phish phix and I love the album. (I’d say the LivePhish catalog if I could!!) U2 – Under a Blood Red Sky because it’s imbued with so many memories.

7. What are some of your favorite hobbies/things to do outside of music and radio?

There’s something other than music?? My favorite thing to do is hang with my kids, regardless of activity, though live music is high on the list but so is disc golf!!

Extra: What shows are you looking forward to in 2025 / What were some of your favorite shows in 2024?

Saw a great DMB show at Nissan. Lake Street Dive at Maymont was spectacular, JRAD at the Pavilion. Looking forward to Dead Air 4!
