Profile: Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic Riverview Farm

Susie Farmer is the Education Director at Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic Riverview Farm in Charlottesville—a nature preserve with over 7 miles of trails and original buildings. Through year-round programming, the Ivy Creek Foundation preserves the legacy of the Carr-Greer family and educates the community about their contributions. Hugh Carr never learned to read or write, but made sure that his seven children received an education. They all went on to become educators or community leaders, including his oldest daughter, Mary.

Hear Together: Anne Spencer House Pierce Street Renaissance Historic District Festival

The Anne Spencer House and Garden Museum in Lynchburg is a nonprofit that preserves and celebrates, through education and research, the literary, cultural, and social legacy of Anne Spencer.

They engage in a broad range of innovative and traditional educational enterprises that use the Spencer properties, collections, and archives to illustrate and document Anne Spencer’s philosophy, vision, and literary accomplishments.

The Anne Spencer House is hosting the annual Pierce Street Renaissance Historic District Festival on Saturday, September 28th from noon-6PM.

This family-friendly event will feature a poetry contest, soul food, live entertainment, games and the grand opening of the Spencer Visitor and Education Center and Pop’s Chicken House Stage.

Hear Together: Roanoke GO Outside Festival

The Roanoke Outside Foundation is a nonprofit in Virginia’s Blue Ridge with a mission to build a better outdoor community through business attraction, strategic partnerships, social offerings, infrastructure investment, and signature outdoor events.

Along with their partners at PLAY Roanoke, they are hosting the Anthem GO Outside Festival this fall—an annual invitation for anyone and everyone to get together and get outside.

Running from October 18th-20th, this 3-day festival is all about getting active with hands-on outdoor activities, pro athlete shows, gear demonstrations, adventure films, more than 100 exhibitors, live music and more.

Community Connection: Forward Foundation Forward Fest

Forward Foundation VA is a nonprofit in Richmond that is dedicated to assisting single working parents and their children who are struggling financially.

They’re hosting the 5th annual GO FORWARD TOGETHER Ride and Forward Fest on Saturday, October 5th at Final Gravity Brewing in Lakeside. Participants can choose between a 30-mile or 50-mile ride, beginning at 8:30AM and ending with an after-party.

Hear Together: Skyline Literacy Golfing for Literacy

Skyline Literacy in Harrisonburg offers English, US citizenship preparation, digital literacy, and basic literacy classes to adult learners in our community. They’re hosting their 7th Annual Golfing for Literacy event on Friday, September 27th, at Heritage Oaks Golf Club in Harrisonburg. Skyline Literacy welcomes you to join them for a day of golf and community spirit, all in support of adult literacy programs in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Lunch will be provided before the event.

Hear Together: Staunton-Augusta YMCA Open House

The Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA, located at 708 North Coalter St in Staunton, is hosting an Open House on Saturday, September 21st from 3 – 6 PM in celebration of serving the Shenandoah Valley for 150 years.

They invite you to bring your entire family to enjoy music by The Hot Mamas, food, and games and activities for youth.

They are partnering with other local non-profits to put on this event to raise awareness of the many services offered to local residents.

Heart Together: CultureWorks ArtoberFest

Richmond CultureWorks is a nonprofit that empowers individual artists and arts and culture organizations to make an impact in Richmond and the Tri-Cities. During the month of October, CultureWorks sponsors artober VA, a celebration of all things arts and culture with a special ArtoberFest event held at the Appomattox Iron Works in Petersburg on October sixth from 3-7 p.m. The event is open to the public and features live music from bands like Los Hermanos Alacranes and U & I Latin Band. There will also be food, art for sale, and other activities.
